Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for:
- People who are 65 or older
- Certain younger people with disabilities
- People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)

These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer prescription drug coverage that follows the same rules as Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.
ORIGINAL MEDICARE DOES NOT INCLUDE: Most dental care, Eye examinations related to prescribing glasses, Dentures, Cosmetic surgery, Acupuncture, Hearing aids and Long-term care. Some, but not all of these items can be part of or added to a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement Plan.

Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medicare supplement insurance policies are sold by private insurance companies. There are 10 modernized plans labeled A through N that pay for part, or all, of Medicare’s co-payments and deductibles. Plan F is the most comprehensive plan. Some plans may cover other health care costs that Medicare does not pay for such as, foreign travel emergency medical care.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Characteristics:
- Large national network
- Covers some or all of the costs not covered by Parts A and B
- Generally no referrals needed
- Protects you financially
- You pay a monthly plan premium
- Part D (Drug) plans are purchased separately
Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)
A health coverage option run by private insurance companies approved by and under contract with Medicare. Includes Part A, Part B, and usually Part D drugs. Medicare Advantage Plans may offer extra coverage, such as vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs. In addition to your Part B premiums you may or you may not, pay one monthly premium for the services provided.
Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) Characteristics:
- Zero premium plans may be available depending on your geographical location
- A majority of plans include Part D (Drugs)
- Additional Benefits – hearing, dental, gym membership
- Network local to the area you live in
- Protects you financially
- Referrals are sometimes needed
- You select a Primary Care Physician
